Online Psychology: Therapy with a Danish Psychologist

At a time when flexibility and accessibility are crucial, online psychology has gained ground as an effective and evidence-based form of treatment. At Den Kognitive Diamant I offer professional online therapy that matches the quality of traditional treatment, with the advantage that you can take part from home.

Online therapy

What is online psychology?

Online psychology, also known as therapy online or online therapy, refers to psychological treatment delivered via digital platforms such as video calls on a phone or computer. This form of therapy can be used on a par with face-to-face treatment when it comes to social anxiety, stress, depression, OCD and low self-esteem. At Den Kognitive Diamant I use evidence-based methods such as cognitive therapy and selected tools from metacognitive therapy in my online treatment.

The advantages of online therapy include increased accessibility, flexibility and comfort. It makes it possible for clients, especially those in rural areas or with limited mobility, to access qualified Danish psychologists without the need to attend in person. For some people with social anxiety, online therapy can be a good way to get started, because the first step feels smaller. The treatment itself, however, works by gradually facing the social situations you fear and letting go of your safety behaviours. Staying at home behind a screen can end up working like the very avoidance that anxiety thrives on. That is why we use the online sessions to prepare for and follow up on exercises out in your own life.

Advantages of online therapy

  1. Increased accessibility: Online therapy makes it possible for clients, especially those in rural areas, Danes living abroad or people with limited mobility, to access qualified Danish psychologists without the need to attend in person. This is particularly important at a time when mental health is in focus and the need for flexible forms of treatment is growing.
  2. Flexibility: With online therapy you can schedule sessions that fit into your everyday life, which reduces stress and increases the chance of continuous treatment. This is especially beneficial for people with busy schedules or those who find it hard to leave home or the workplace.
  3. Comfort and privacy: Many feel safer receiving therapy in their own home, which can lead to more open and honest conversations. This is particularly relevant for people with social anxiety, who may find it challenging to attend sessions in person.
  4. Evidence of effectiveness: Studies have shown that online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is just as effective as traditional face-to-face therapy for a range of disorders, including social anxiety and depression. This is supported by, among others, a meta-analysis of 57 studies (Batastini et al., Clinical Psychology Review 2021), which found that therapy by video produced largely the same effects as face-to-face sessions.

Is online therapy effective?

Many studies show that the effect is largely the same whether sessions are face to face or online:

Research therefore supports the effectiveness of online therapy. Systematic reviews show that internet-based CBT is just as effective as traditional therapy for various mental disorders. For some people with social anxiety, online therapy can be a good start. The treatment itself, however, is about gradually facing the social situations you fear, so we also practise away from the screen.

  • You can read more about each form of treatment on my page about treatments.

Why choose a Danish psychologist online if you live abroad?

If you live abroad and choose a Danish psychologist for online therapy, you receive treatment that is culturally and linguistically adapted to you. It is also often more comfortable to have psychological treatment in your own language, as people can usually express themselves better in their mother tongue.

Therese Ejerskov, who runs Den Kognitive Diamant, is an authorised psychologist and a specialist in psychotherapy with adults. She has extensive experience with online treatment, and in her experience the benefit is the same whether sessions take place online or face to face.

It is also important to choose a psychologist who understands the Danish mentality and can offer treatment that takes your life situation into account – including if you live abroad. This helps make the therapy effective and adapted to your needs.
